The Columbus Guide On How To Profit From A Blog
Posted by peter | In: Blogging, Product Creation
Columbus was the explorer and navigator that ended up “discovering” the American continent. Today we can learn from him, by discovering a profitable business inside our own blogs.
To truly make a profit with your blog you need to look at it with a different perspective. If you already have a successful blog then you’re already half-way into making a real profit from your blog. This post will show you how.
1. Discover Something To Sell
It’s as simple as this: to make money with a blog you have to sell something, and the easiest thing to sell on your blog is information, such as an e-book or a form of membership-only content.
There are other ways to make money with it but this is the only way to truly profit from a blog.
Do people still pay for information?
Yes, and nowadays more than ever. Even if the information is available for free on the web, people still pay for it.
What kind of information do people pay for?
People pay for stuff they know that they will benefit from, like how to solve a problem, achieve a strong desire or save time.
For example, if your blog is about playing guitar, you can create a course that teaches anyone how play basic guitar songs in 6 weeks. People pay for this because it helps them achieve a desire and saves them time.
“I don’t have anything to teach!”
First of all you have to keep in mind that you will probably never create completely exclusive information. This is not a problem at all, we all know that most information is available out there for free (just think about libraries, they have everything for free!).
But the thing is, humans are lazy and we like to have things ultra-simplified and easy to use. And that’s where you come in, your job is to simplify information already available, it is to give order to a chaotic world of information and pack it all into a nice, organized and clean product.
2. Create An Easy-To-Use Product
When creating an information product, simplifying is key. Focus on creating something that is absolutely easy to use and follow. This could be either an e-book or a paid membership part on your blog (which I recommend because it can be more flexible and valuable).
You might think that creating a product isn’t for everyone and you’re right. The 80/20 rule also applies here, 80% of the people are too lazy and they buy products from the 20% of people that created them. The odds are on your side!
“But wait a second, isn’t the web already full with products that are just about anything?”
Yes, but none of them offer your “unique perspective”. As I’ve said above, you don’t need to create unique products because most products are already on the market anyway, you just to have to deliver them in your own unique way.
Just think about Pepsi, it’s pretty much the same thing as Coca-cola with just little a difference but still there are millions of people drinking it and they make a lot of money!
Make your product unique by delivering it with your own perspective
Your “unique perspective” is a combination of your blog design, your own writing style (your blogging voice), your preferred type of content, basically, it’s the way you naturally deliver your content. People love a unique perspective and it is what makes them choose one brand over another.
Sometimes, what’s unique about your perspective is not what you think it is. The best way to find your own “spice” is to ask a friend or your readers what they like the most about the way you write your posts.
You don’t need to be an expert!
People don’t care if you’re an expert or not, they just care about if your product works or not. You just need to show them that it does work and make sure they believe in it.
3. Sell The Product!
If you already have a popular blog with a lot of loyal followers, then this is pretty straightforward. The key is to let everybody know about what you offer and show them that it really does work.
Selling a product to your loyal followers has to feel like the natural evolution of your relationship, so your confidence in your product has to be spot on.
Persistence is key
Did you know that Columbus failed to get sponsorship for his voyages numerous of times? Had he given up, I bet the world would be a little different now. If you fail, just get up and try again or go explore somewhere else.
